5 Ways Educators Can Reduce

As an educator you have a very important role, which is raising awareness and mobilizing action on critical environmental issues. Through conscious effort and ongoing education, we are creating a groundswell of change that history is going to remember. Let’s get started now by reducing the amount of trash we create!

1. Do a garbage audit of your classroom:

  • Identify the biggest culprits (plastics, styrofoam, tins, and paper)
  • Note how many of these items you use every day
  • Try to reduce how many you use and throw away

2. Reduce the amount of paper you use in the classroom

  • Reuse paper that only has writing on one side, cutting the amount of paper you use in half
  • Read documents on your computer rather than printing them out

3. Avoid using disposable items

  • Encourage parents and students to pack a waste-free lunch

4. Buy school supplies in bulk when practical

  • Products packaged in bulk produce less waste

5. Use an overhead projector or blackboard to reduce the amount of photocopied paper distributed in class
