5 Ways Children Can Reduce
As a young person there is a lot you can do to protect the natural environment. In fact right now is the best time to get started, so that you can develop the habits you need to make a difference in your city. Let’s get started now by reducing the amount of trash we create!
1. Do a garbage audit of your home or class
- Identify the biggest culprits (plastics, styrofoam, tins, and paper)
- Note how many of these items you use every day
- Try to reduce how many you use and throw away
2. Use Reusable containers
- Take homemade deserts or fresh fruits to school
- Use a reusable lunch box or bag
- Avoid packaged snacks
3. Turns things off
- Climb stairs instead of using the elevator
- Turn off lights, TV’s and computers when not in use
- Use air-conditioning wisely. For example, by turning the temperature of your air conditioner up to 24 degrees you will remain comfortable and save a significant amount of energy
4. Use less water
- Take showers instead of baths
- Ask your parents to install low-flow showerheads
- Turn off the water while you brush your teeth
5. Teach your family to reduce
- Walk to the store rather than drive
- Buy large refillable water jugs
- Reuse plastic bags for carrying things
