- MoU will lead to adoption of enforceable environmental standards throughout Hamriyah Free Zone
(Sharjah, United Arab Emirates) - 3 March 2008- Today, His Highness Sheikh Khaled Bin Abdullah Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of Hamriyah Free Zone Authority (HFZ) and His Excellency Salim Bin Mohammed Al Owais, Chairman of the Department of Municipality and Agriculture, and Chairman of Bee’ah, The Sharjah Environment Company, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Bee’ah and Hamriyah Free Zone which will form the basis of Bee’ah becoming the regulatory and monitoring partner of the Free Zone Authority.
The signing of the MoU sets forth the mutual intent of both parties to enter into a cooperation on environmental management and monitoring, and outlines the working relationship HFZ and Bee’ah intend to enter into. In this relationship, Bee’ah shall provide environmental services to prospective and existing Free Zone members, as well as environmental consulting services (standards, policies, administration and enforcement) within the Free Zone. This agreement is the first of its kind in the UAE and is expected to help establish best practices that can be used as a model for environmental legislation elsewhere.
Chairman Al Owais said: “This is the first, but it will certainly not be the last, positive step to ensuring that businesses in Sharjah are able to show their commitment to protecting the precious environment of our emirate. We are delighted that Bee’ah will play such an important role in the cooperation with HFZ, and at the direction this partnership is taking.”
Sheikh Khaled added, “The Memorandum of Understanding signed today firmly demonstrates that Hamriyah Free Zone and the companies operating inside it are taking their environmental responsibilities seriously. By showing our intent to create environmental standards and
legislation within HFZ, we reinforce our commitment – and the commitment of Bee’ah – to helping Sharjah become a ‘green’ emirate.”
Samer Kamal, Managing Director of Bee’ah, further commented, “The signing of the MoU is great news for anyone living, working or operating a business in Sharjah. It has been proven that effective environmental practices benefit not only the well-being of the environment and those in it but also the profitability of the businesses implementing them”.
