(Dubai, United Arab Emirates) – June 2, 2008 – Bee’ah, the Sharjah Environment Company today announced a multi-stage expansion of recycling activities in the Emirate of Sharjah, increasing the reach of their trial activities into new and significant areas of the community.

The first area of expansion took place in February, at the Finance Department of Sharjah Government took delivery of 75 Bee’ah Blue Boxes that are placed in offices and communal and public waiting areas; and are used for the depositing of recyclable materials.

Commenting on the decision to participate in the scheme, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Saud Al Qasimi, Head of the Finance Department of the Government of Sharjah, said; “We are very pleased to embrace the already-successful recycling scheme of Bee’ah and play our part in ensuring that Sharjah becomes a truly environmentally-friendly Emirate. I believe that the continued growth of recycling activities represents the intensification of something that provides huge benefits – but it is something that every one of us can contribute to by making small adjustments to our everyday lives.”

Mr. Samer Kamal, Managing Director of Bee’ah said, “This expansion of our recycling initiatives is an exciting and important development. By participating in our recycling program, the Government of Sharjah is both recognizing the important of environmental issues, as well as taking practical steps to reduce the impact on the environment. At Bee’ah, we’re delighted to have such a prominent institution endorsing recycling schemes fully.”

At the same time, 100 Blue Boxes of Bee’ah were distributed to the residents of every apartment in Lagoon Tower on the Buhaira Corniche, marking the beginning of a pilot residential recycling scheme that will be used to determine what volumes of recyclable waste are generated, what the composition of the waste is, and the rate of correct usage of the Blue Boxes.

Samer continued: “Following on from the placement of recycling bins on the Sharjah Corniche, which made recycling facilities available to the people of Sharjah for the first time, it’s now possible for many residents to contribute in their own homes to the improvement of the environment. We believe we will see the same high rates of usage as we have seen in both our commercial scheme and the recycling facilities on the Corniche, as people welcome the opportunity to begin meeting the environmental challenges being faced by Sharjah.”

Additionally, the pilot commercial recycling scheme has been expanded, with 100 Blue Boxes delivered to Sharjah Discovery Centre and a further 50 delivered to Sharjah Expo Centre. This expansion follows the success of the first stag of the commercial scheme that has been running in Al Batha Tower, Sharjah since September 2007. It is easy to participate in, as it is not necessary to sort or separate recyclable materials.

All recyclable materials can be mixed together in a single recycling container which is provided free of charge.  This helps ensure maximum participation, reduces the number of trucks needed to collect recyclables, saves on costs, and cuts down on air pollution.

Recyclables are then transported to a secure facility where they are sorted, weighed, and stored in the short term.  The recycled material collected is audited and the captured data used to determine the various types and quantities of material collected.

Further expansions to the recycling schemes of Bee’ah are in the advanced stages of planning and will be announced shortly.
